Getting In The Storage Auction Business In 2013

It is the end of  2012 and the buzz of the storage auction business is not as loud as it once was, but many people are still getting into the game. Over the years I have made many videos about the business and only a few about getting in the storage auction business.  Storage Wars, Auction Hunters and that other show Storage Hunters have changed the storage auction game forever.  The good old days of 95% of America not knowing about storage auctions are over. Even the chick in the beauty shop has heard about the show, she may have never laid eyes on Barry, but she has general ideal of what the show is about.   People losing their shit, when they don’t pay!

When I got in the game in 2000, there were maybe 2000 people in Atlanta that knew about the game and even fewer that came out every week to look through the remnants of a life interrupted.  No one rents a storage unit and expects to lose it. It is all spelled out in the reams of paperwork you fill out to actually rent the storage unit. Few people  actually read the contract and of that small group even fewer understand it. That is why the storage staff even tells you verbally what will happen if you don’t pay off your unit  and that information is quickly forgotten, if it was ever noted.

Each year after the *reality* shows aired the game changed. At one point the behavior of the average person getting in the game was on the same street as insanity close to the alley I-lost-my-freaking-mind over storage auctions. I talked more than a few people off of the ledge ” No don’t quit your job and go full-time!” ” No don’t raid your 401K”  No do not take a second mortgage out on your almost paid off home to jump in the game!”  The were just some of the crazy emails I responded to, the storage auction game can be  lucrative business and it also can bankrupt you! One week was so crazy I made this video.

Do’s and Don’ts of Getting In The Storage Auction Game 2011

Well in 2012 going into 2013 the game has changed once again….but, it is now better to get in the business now, the diamond has lost its luster and many people were reluctant to go out and try their hand at the storage auction game.  The Dave Hester  ”Storage Wars is Fake announcement  blew the lid off of things, which in my opinion is going to make that lukewarm potential storage auction buyer turn ice-cold and keep his janky ass at home. The show will go on, but for the already skeptical that  information was all they needed to shoot curiosity in the heart,  and it will dim the lights on new arrivals on the storage auction trail.

For you my bright-eyed and bushy-tailed friend, this means more opportunity for you. The game was always hard, storage auctions place a heavy physical demand on you and you must learn how to sell a variety of things to be a success at the game. Buying units is easy, the  money is in the logistics and the speed of your selling channels. This is where you now have the advantage. Any fool can go out and buy storage units, it takes a special breed to consistently make money flipping units. That is where skill and business acumen replace wide-eyed-wonder and drinking storage auction reality television Kool-Aid.

One major change in advice is you need to make a decision on whether you are going full-time or part-time ASAP. You can still make some decent change part -time, but each year it is going to become harder and harder for the part-timer to thrive. It takes infrastructure to buy more units and you want to buy as many units as you can. “The more units you buy the luckier you will become.”  This does not mean you will not buy a trash unit and it doesn’t mean you will not lose money, because you will. Every business person I know of, regardless of the business they are in. At some point in their business lost money, so don’t freak out. It is normal to lose money, it is not normal or sustainable to never lose money. When you take risks, there is the chance for upside and downside, if you are on the upside more often than not, this will absorb those loses and you will still make a profit.

Another change and recommendation is don’t watch the TV shows, they only show 10% of the business, they are ill-suited to teach you how to make money in the storage auction business. These shows were created to make revenue for the network and production company, which they do very well. No mention of you making any loot in the production meetings, because you don’t count. You are just a tool to leverage ad income, not saying it is wrong, just saying how it is. I read forums, YouTube comments and receive emails about these shows. The are like that chick with the nice boob job, pretty face and absolutely the worst personality you can  imagine, but because she is shiny you deal with her. Once you breakup, it is one hell of what-the-fuck-was-I-thinking moment.
